The project promises to be a paradigm-shifting breakthrough for California, and for the U.S., in three key ways.
1. Connecting cities and regions.
2. Cutting fossil fuel consumption.
3. Reducing road construction and congestion.
High-speed rail will benefit California in all these ways—but only if the governor and state legislature reaffirm their support for electrified trains running at 200 mph on the line’s first segment, the Central Valley.
Only electrified high-speed rail will change the transportation paradigm in California. It will deliver the environmental benefits of using 100 percent renewable energy. And it will build the political will needed to complete the full line—the Bay Area to LA—by showcasing the transformative power of 200 mph trains.
We need both electrified high-speed rail and upgraded commuter rail. We need better conventional passenger trains, too. It’s vital for California to transform its transportation system, and lead the nation toward a better path, by funding all of them.
